Training for Community Volunteers Teaching English to Newcomers

At CCI-LEX, we are grateful for the support we received from Field Law for our training program for Community Volunteers Teaching English to Newcomers.

As many newcomers to Canada experience barriers that prevent them from attending English Language classes that are more formalized and structured, smaller community organizations and individuals work hard to fill this gap to meet newcomers where they are. Our program identifies these groups and casual volunteer teachers in Edmonton, and supports them with a training workshop, a set of lesson plans, and other teaching resources.

With Field Law’s support we were able to provide 3 more workshops training 31 volunteer teachers, which helped us to keep the momentum we have built over the past two years and reach out to more community members. Moving forward, by charging a small fee (waived if necessary), we aim to make our training workshops self-sustaining.
