Adapted Adventure Program – Borrow it, Try it, Do it!

The Cause

The Covid-19 pandemic has underscored the need for people to get outside and enjoy public spaces safely and equitably. Our existing bike share program allows for the pooled lending of adapted bikes for children with disabilities, so they too can participate in safe outdoor activities. As the pandemic has increased the need for mobility options, so too has the need for our programs and services. Due to various physical disabilities, our members have historically been marginalized or experienced barriers accessing public spaces. Covid-19 has only exacerbated these issues, and we aim to overcome these barriers by providing mobility options that not only permit physical distancing but enhance safe social interactions and healthy physical activities. We have collaborated with members of the community, addressing their needs and expanding the range of equipment we offer in the lending program to include not only bikes but sleds, strollers and many others. The projected outcomes of the project are: children and individuals living with a physical disability will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities. As well, families will not be burdened with the incredible expense of adaptive equipment which increases their ability to utilize their community spaces. People in the community will then see individuals with physical disabilities as valued members of society. Cycling and sledding in Calgary will be accessible to all, making the city a leader in accessible opportunities for all individuals. Mental and physical health will be improved through physical activity.

Who Will it Benefit?
