Swamp Donkey Theatre

The Cause

The Swamp Donkey Musical Theatre Society is a non-profit community musical theatre society in Bragg Creek, Alberta. Our mission is to provide theatrical education and performance opportunities to foster skill development and build community. We are in the process of moving from a multi-user facility to a new rental space where we are creating a black box performing arts theatre. This space gives us greater opportunity to meet our objectives which include:
- providing a space for musical theatre educational and performance opportunities to enable individuals of all ages and abilities to learn musical theatre skills such as acting, voice, dance, design, construction, and theatre tech;
- increasing the community's understanding of and appreciation for musical theatre by providing musical theatre performances in a public space and inviting the audience to become a partner in the shared experience; and
- providing a space where musical theatre can be used as a tool to teach life skills such as self-expression, cooperation, social interaction, collaboration, and self-esteem.

We are seeking funds from the Field Law Community Fund Program to purchase sound and lighting equipment for the new theatre space.

Who Will it Benefit?

The theatre space will benefit residents of the greater Bragg Creek area and beyond. We have participants from Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Priddis, Turner Valley, Black Diamond, Foothills, Cochrane, Olds, and Calgary. We have 1,000+ individuals who access our facility and programming. These individuals include course participants, volunteer cast members, volunteer crew, and audience members. Our past participants range in age from six years to seventy years. Our facility and programming are inclusive and we invite individuals from all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to participate.
