The Cause
Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories (HFH NT) is a non-profit organization working toward a North where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
HFH NT provided two Northern families with safe, decent, and affordable homes in 2013. On December 13, 2018 HFH NT turned the keys over to the latest family.
Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to build homes and promote home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. With the help of volunteers, our goal is to help provide Northern families with a safe, decent, and affordable home.
Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories is one of 72 Canadian affiliates and is a member of Habitat for Humanity International, which has built, rehabilitated, repaired, or improved more than 400 000 homes worldwide, providing shelter for more than 2 million people since 1976.
Our Idea
We want to continue providing to the Northwest Territories the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty with the assistance of the community volunteers. HFH NT is truly unique as we are a small population that is spread out amongst a vast Territory. We have provided 4 families homes and have the plans for our fourth build to empower another family with home ownership. The majority of funds are raised and donated from community members even the Board of HFH NT are all volunteers, The success of our past builds reflect that the community cares about our project and their continual participation and donations aid in the better of the community as a whole.
Who Will it Benefit?
Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership model empowers families to invest in homeownership. Through volunteer labour, efficient management and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families with a down payment in the form of “sweat equity” and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are set to a maximum of 30% of their gross income and mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used by affiliates to build more homes for more families in need.

We have seen the community come and show their appreciation through volunteering, we had 24 volunteers from southern Canada and over 30 local volunteers during the builds. Over 32 local contractors and businesses have donated materials, labour and services. The selected family volunteers and assists in building their future home. It truly benefits all involved and ultimately the community.
