Camp Connections Cookhouse Renovation!
The Cause
Camp Connections is an on the land based adventure camp for children ages 7-18 who have been involved with Social Services in the NWT.
Currently Camp Connections is fundraising to rebuild our cookhouse.
The cookhouse is the central gathering place at camp, it is where the kids have their meals, where arts and crafts take place as well it is where the all important schedule of the day is posted and reviewed. For children who have been in care, having a clear outlined plan of the day is very comforting and necessary.
The Camp Director has been in discussions with an architect in Yellowknife who has agreed to draw up blueprints for the project and now it is a matter of securing funding for the build itself.
Who Will it Benefit?
The rebuild of the cookhouse will most importantly benefit the children who attend Camp Connections. More than 100 kids between the ages of 7 and 18 attend every summer. All of the children who attend Camp Connections have been involved with Social Services in some way, be it through foster care, adoption or a birth child living in a foster/adoptive home.
Many of these children have experienced traumas and/or abuse. For some, Camp Connections is the one consistent place in their life. Camp gives these children a place to feel safe, empowered and cared for.
Having a new building for them will only increase these feelings for them that they are valued and important.
