Assignment Saving Lives 2023

The Cause

The Assignment Saving Lives bursary program at Canadian Blood Services, funded entirely by philanthropic donors, invites students to help recruit the next generation of blood donors as a crucial part of Canada’s Lifeline. It’s an opportunity for students over the age of 17 in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan to raise awareness for blood donation and encourage their peers to become blood donors. Active participants will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, project management experience, and a chance to win a bursary of up to $3,000 for their post-secondary education studies – all while meaningfully impacting lives of patients in their community and across the country.

To be entered into a draw for a bursary or prize, a participant – any student over the age of 17 who is enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary education program – needs to recruit a minimum of ten unique blood, plasma, or platelet donors to attend a Canadian Blood Services donation event between June and October, to be eligible to win a scholarship or prize.

The bursary and prizes will be disbursed as follows:
• One (1) bursary in the amount of $2,000 for the qualified entrant that has the most donor recruits who book and attend their appointment during the contest period.
• One (1) bursary in the amount of $1,500 for the qualified entrant that has the second most donor recruits who book and attend their appointment during the contest period.
• Seven (7) prizes in the amount of $750 will be awarded by random draw from the remaining eligible entries received from students based in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

This incredible pay-it-forward initiative – which relies solely on philanthropic dollars – has adapted to a more digital era.

A gift from the Field Law Community Fund would allow the Canadian Blood Services to continue this lifesaving initiative and will help increase the value of the bursaries for Alberta-based students. Who Will it Benefit?

Any student in the prairie region (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan) – regardless of their race, sexual orientation, geographic location, or financial means – can participate and benefit from this program.

Even more importantly, any Canadian in need of blood or blood products – which includes workplace/vehicle accidents, patients undergoing cancer treatments, rare blood disorders….the list goes on – will have access to products and services when and where they need them. Canadian Blood Services plays a key role in our health-care system, and with the help from generous donors in the community, we are here for patients today and in the future.

We invite Field Law to support Alberta-based students in this pay-it-forward, youth development initiative.

Please refer to the bullet points below for a full description of how funds are allocated based on current bursary and prizing amounts.

In total, sixteen (16) scholarships and prizes (“Scholarships” and “Prizes”) will be awarded as follows, with Scholarships based on residency during the Contest Period:
• Three (3) Scholarships* in the amount of $2,000 each for the qualified Entrant that has the most Donor Recruits who book and attend their appointment during the Contest Period.
• Three (3) Scholarships* in the amount of $1,500 each for the qualified Entrant that has the second most Donor Recruits who book and attend their blood donation appointment during the Contest Period.
• Seven (7) Prizes in the amount of $750 will be awarded by random draw from the remaining eligible Entries in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
• New this year: Three (3) Prizes* in the amount of $1000 each will be awarded to the qualified Entrant that has the most New Donor** Recruits who book and attend their appointment during the Contest Period. Random draw winners are ineligible to win the New Donor Recruits prize. First and Second Donor Recruit prize winners are eligible for the New Donor Recruits prize.
*Prizes will be allocated on a regional basis, with one for each of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
**A new donor is someone who has not booked and attended an appointment with Canadian Blood Services before.
