Youth Sport Training Facility
The Cause
The goals of this project are to make participating in sport more accessible to youth in the Northwest Territories. To make this possible, The Multi-Sport Training Facility will need gain grant funding that will support making improvements the facility grounds itself. The Facility is a partnership project between Hockey NWT, NWT Softball and the Aboriginal Sport Circle of the NWT. There is a shortage of gym space in the city which creates competition between the various user groups for prime time bookings. Having a facility that is equipped with sport specific training aids alleviates stress on volunteer coaches who no longer have to transport and set up equipment for every training session.
Programming that is housed in the Training Facility is delivered by trained coaches is a safe and fun environment for kids.
This has been a perfect space to host player, coach and official development for our community.
Our facility needs extensive renovations to be compliant with fire regulations and to become inclusive to athletes, coaches that have mobility limitations. We hope to complete the required renovations to allow us to realize the full potential of this project and provide a greater service to the residents of Yellowknife and the NWT as a whole. Support funding would allow for each organization to invest more money on development programs and other community outreach opportunities.
Who Will it Benefit?
This facility aims to benefit the community of Yellowknife and the Sport Community in the Northwest Territories as a whole. Hockey NWT has a mandate to create positive hockey experiences for residents across the NWT. We see this facility as a way to facilitate networking opportunities through hosting coach clinics and virtual offerings that previously were not possible.
The partner organizations are committed to the development of sport in the NWT and will look for ways to help other user groups - this could include making our space available for their programs or inviting other organizations to attend our offerings.
The facility has hosted: Oiler First Shift Program (hockey gear distribution), Team Canada Women's Para Hockey Team Camp/fitness testing, hockey athlete training sessions, pitching clinics, softball training, lacrosse training, archery training, dene games & arctic sports training sessions, table tennis training, team events, coaching clinics, umpire/officials clinics, board meetings, Arctic Winter Games territorial trials and free accommodations option for teams traveling through Yellowknife.
