Legal Literacy Education
The Cause
The Legal Literacy Education project proposed by The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) aims to help enhance the legal knowledge of newcomers, immigrants, and refugees in Southern Alberta, which will lead to better understanding of their rights and responsibilities. To achieve this goal, a multifaceted approach with interactive legal activities education and workshops will be adopted. This project will be focusing on basic legal concepts relevant to newcomers, immigrants and refugees, such as employment law, immigration law, and family law (focusing on domestic violence) and legal consequences of common issues faced by these populations. The project will also provide the clients with access to legal resources and professional lawyers. The ultimate goal of the project is to enable the clients to make informed legal decisions through strengthened legal literacy. Legal professionals will conduct specialized sessions and workshops to provide in-depth knowledge of legal rights and responsibilities. The sessions will be recorded and available on TIES E-learning platform to facilitate future needs, with the approval of the funder and the speakers. The clients will learn how to successfully handle the legal related difficult situations with proper legal resource materials, toolkits developed in the project including where to seek legal assistance or advice in their communities. Through this initiative, we strive to help build a stronger community, where we all are equipped to navigate the legal challenges proactively.
Who Will it Benefit?
The Legal Literacy Education Initiative targets vulnerable newcomers, immigrants and refuges in southern Alberta, particularly focusing on underserved populations. By providing legal literacy education support, the initiative aims to empower a minimum of 360 immigrants and provide them with opportunities to unleash their potential. These benefits underserved populations and the entire community. The following are among some of the highlights:
1. TIES will provide workshops that create a comprehensive legal literacy education for the participants.
2. TIES incorporates interactive activities such as role-playing scenarios and group discussions to make the program practical for the participants.
3. TIES will incorporate the recorded sessions into our language, employment, entrepreneurship, and settlement programs to ensure that legal literacy education reaches out to large number of immigrants.
4. Data Collection: With our increased reach, we can collect more data to analyze and grow our program by identifying service gaps and sharing best practices. This will also attract more investment and funding through impact reporting.
