Lucina Birth Centre Family Support Fund

The Cause

Who are we?
The Lucina Birth Centre (LBC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their race, gender, religion, culture, or socioeconomic status. We offer a supportive, inclusive, and comfortable birthing environment. We are a small, private medical facility with two birthing suites, welcoming all cultural practices and ceremonies in our space.

The birth centre is intended for people with low-risk pregnancies under midwifery care in Alberta. We minimize the level of obstetrical intervention and offer unmedicated pain-coping tools.

What do we need funding for?
Lucina Birth Centre is requesting a lump-sum grant of $20,000 from the Field Law Community Fund Program. This grant will significantly increase accessibility of our birth centre within our community through our Lucina Family Support Fund. This fund pays for birth centre fees for eligible birthers. A $20,000 lump-sum grant will allow us to welcome about 30 people to use our facility (in a 12 month period) who would otherwise never be able to consider this as a birthing location or experience.

Our birth centre fee is $650+gst with $200+gst of this total being a non-refundable registration fee. We encourage people to pay as much as they can. Based on their financial circumstances, each client may need slightly different amounts of subsidy.

This funding will be used exclusively to pay for client birth centre registration/use fees and the amount requested is for a 12 month period, with hopes for a grant renewal each year. The funds granted will sit in a separate account designated to our Lucina Family Support Fund.
