Integrated School Support Program
The Cause
We are applying to extend the Integrated School Support Program (ISSP). The goal of ISSP is to highlight the importance of implementing wrap around supports earlier on in student's school community. The vision is to help prevent the violence and complexities we are seeing trends of in our Junior and Senior High Schools. ISSP is a program created by the Calgary Police Youth Foundation and a research team with the University of Calgary. Willow Park School was identified by Calgary Youth Police Foundation as a strong candidate school to pilot this program for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. We have observed some great successes and hear ongoing positive feedback from students, parents and other stakeholders regarding the importance and impact of this program. It is our belief that by keeping our grades 4-6s busy during the identified "crime time" of 3-6pm in the evenings after school, we are supporting our youth to keep off the streets and out of trouble, while simultaneously supporting their development by ensuring they are receiving programming opportunities that boost emotional wellness, self-confidence and establishing healthy relationships with caring young adults.
Who Will it Benefit?
In a targeted neighborhood with significant challenges, the youth aged 10 to 12 often navigate a complex landscape. Many of these children might find themselves home alone after school, but this environment can pose risks that extend beyond physical safety. They may lack supervision, leading to increased vulnerability to negative influences and limited access to resources that promote healthy development.
Engaging these young individuals through structured programming can provide a crucial support system. By connecting them with university student mentors who serve as positive role models, we can foster a safe space for skill development and personal growth. These mentors bring energy, enthusiasm, and a wealth of knowledge, inspiring the youth to explore their interests, whether in academics, sports, or the arts.
Programming could include after-school activities, workshops, and community events, allowing the children to build friendships and a sense of belonging. In this environment, they can learn valuable life skills—like teamwork, problem-solving, and communication—while also developing hobbies that keep them engaged and productive.
By creating a supportive community, we empower these young individuals to envision a brighter future, instilling confidence and resilience that will serve them well beyond their elementary school years. This holistic approach not only enriches their lives but strengthens the community as a whole.
