Black Future Lawyers University of Alberta Student Chapter

The Cause

Black Future Lawyers University of Alberta Chapter (BFL UAlberta) is a student-led organization dedicated to supporting undergraduate students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, in pursuing their aspirations of entering the legal profession. Recognizing the barriers faced by Black students and marginalized groups in accessing legal education, we aim to bridge this gap through tailored resources, mentorship, and a strong community.

As the first BFL chapter outside of Ontario, our mission is to create an inclusive, supportive environment where students thrive academically, personally, and professionally on their path to law school. We provide our members with comprehensive guidance, equipping them with the tools and opportunities to succeed in the legal field. BFL UAlberta connects undergraduate students with experienced Black legal professionals, including lawyers, judges, and current law students, offering valuable mentorship and networking opportunities that can open doors in the legal industry.

We also aim to provide job shadowing opportunities and summer internships, giving students hands-on experience in legal settings, exposure to courtroom proceedings, and insight into the daily responsibilities of lawyers and judges. These experiences help students refine their career goals and develop essential skills for their future legal careers.

Throughout the academic year, we host workshops, lectures, and networking events on topics such as resume writing, interview skills, LSAT preparation, and personal statement development. Recognizing the financial challenges often faced by students pursuing legal education, we offer admissions and financial aid information sessions to ensure students are well informed about application processes, scholarships, and financial planning for law school.

In addition, we provide free LSAT preparation courses for eligible members to help them achieve competitive scores, a critical component of law school admissions. By removing financial barriers to LSAT prep, we strive to level the playing field and give our members a fair chance to succeed.

Whether you are a Black student considering law school or a passionate advocate for social justice, BFL UAlberta offers a welcoming and enriching space for growth, learning, and connection. Together, we are shaping the future of law by empowering the next generation of Black legal professionals.

Who Will it Benefit?

Our program will help Black high school and undergraduate youth in the Edmonton region who are interested in the legal field. Beyond Black students, the organization also welcomes individuals from other underrepresented communities who may face barriers to entering the legal profession. By creating an inclusive environment, BFL UAlberta seeks to address broader issues of diversity and equity within the legal field.
