Kapwa for Youth
The Cause
Vivo for Healthier Generations is a charity with a profound purpose to ignite a mindset to LIVE for healthier generations. Through our Centre, we offer accessible, inclusive spaces and wellness programs such as swimming, skating, climbing, group fitness, preschools, summer camps and much more. Through our Collaboratory, we work alongside communities to apply leading practices in community engagement, social innovation and people-centric design to co-create, test, measure and scale innovative health solutions.
Our idea is “Kapwa for Youth”, a free, youth-centered initiative at Vivo designed to foster community connection, promote a sense of belonging, and combat social isolation among teens. "Kapwa" is a Filipino word meaning "kindred", “neighbour” or "fellow human," and it speaks to the shared identity our community has cultivated over the years. This spirit is captured in the vibrant mural on our walls (see attached) —and in every heartbeat of our work. It’s the essence of who we are, as we bring people together to live healthier, happier, and more connected lives.
“Kapwa for Youth” will offer organized activities such as breakdancing performances with crowd participation (Break YYC), 3-on-3 basketball tournaments (Fiesta Filipino), Saturday Night Lights with DJ-led dance sessions, firepit nights and refreshments. Each event will offer fun and diverse experiences designed to interest a wide range of youth, from social gatherings to physical activities.
In addition, we will establish an after-school study hall, providing a safe and supportive environment for youth to study, socialize, and experience a sense of community. This initiative seeks to create a welcoming space where young people can connect with peers, find encouragement, and gain a deeper sense of belonging.
Who Will it Benefit?
Kapwa for Youth will benefit teens aged 12-18 in North Central Calgary, however the initiative is open to all teens. With 22% of residents under 14 and 19% between 15-29 years old, the area has a significant youth demographic. Additionally, North Central Calgary is highly diverse, with 59% of the population identifying as visible minorities, making it essential to provide inclusive programming that reflects the community's varied backgrounds.
By participating in “Kapwa for Youth” activities, youth will benefit by building stronger social networks, developing a stronger connection to their community, which will increase their sense of belonging and enhance their overall well-being. By addressing social isolation—especially among newcomers, low-income families, and vulnerable populations – “Kapwa for Youth” will help create opportunities for connection, resilience, and a sense of purpose in a supportive environment. Kapwa for Youth aims to empower local teens, foster inclusivity, and cultivate a healthier, more connected community by providing a safe, fun, and inclusive space.
We will reach out to local ethno-cultural groups such as Fiesta Filipino and Centre for Newcomers and local high schools to promote “Kapwa for Youth”
