Contemporary Dance Production: “Into the Wilderness”

The Cause

We are requesting $25,000 to support the development and presentation of "Into the Wilderness", an evening-length contemporary dance production that delves into the human experience of uncertainty and transformation. This work, led by Corps Bara Dance Theatre's Artistic Director, Kathryn Hood, will journey through themes of personal authenticity, courage, and the unknown. Drawing inspiration from a nighttime wilderness expedition, "Into the Wilderness" will capture the essence of stepping into a place of vulnerability—a metaphor for navigating life's daunting challenges and profound discoveries.
Corps Bara Dance Theatre has a 20-year history of creating evocative contemporary dance works that engage the intellect, emotions, and spirit. Known for our unique blend of spirituality, artistry, and community engagement, our mission is to illuminate meaningful questions and inspire audiences to see their own journeys reflected in ours. Our work weaves together kinesthetic imagery, metaphor, and storytelling to create resonant experiences that span beyond the performance itself.
We are currently in the research and development phase, building a compelling work that bridges professional dance practice and community engagement. Our creative journey began with an Artistic Residency at Decidedly Jazz Dance Theatre (DJD) and our first Pop-Up event at a local business, Bridge 15 Café, on September 19th. These initial phases have laid the groundwork for a deeper exploration of choreography and audience participation.
With $25,000 in support, we aim to take the next steps in our development through:
- Rehearsals: Funding will allow us to compensate professional dancers to continue refining the choreography and complete the work in a professional environment.
- Community Pop-Up Event: In January, we’ll host a Pop-Up performance in collaboration with a local business, bringing our creation process to a new audience and gaining further insights that will inform the final presentation.
- Theatre Presentation: The project will culminate in three performances at DJD on March 7 & 8, 2025, allowing us to present Into the Wilderness in its full form for Calgary’s community.
- Public Workshop: As part of our commitment to accessibility, we’ll offer a free, interactive workshop open to the public on March 8th, providing a chance for audiences to engage with the concepts of courage, self-discovery, and authenticity through movement games, dialogue, and expressive arts.
