Growing Inter-generationally Together (GIT)
The Cause
Expanding and improving the community gardens as there is a growing need for gardening opportunities in the inner city of Calgary. Our goal for 2016 is well under way as we have built 4 new raised garden boxes with new soil, mulch and chicken wire. We are staining all of the boxes with the help of volunteers. We now have a list of people who want additional boxes built.
Who Will it Benefit?
In 2015 the Killarney Glengarry Community Association approached the Good Companions 50 Plus Club as they had a wait list for their garden plots. The Executive Director saw this as an excellent opportunity to involve our community neighbors, thus a new collaborative effort was created - a community gardening partnership! The local schools visit the gardens as field trips to learn about gardening, The project is designed to continue growing by engaging new people moving into the neighborhood. Our 7th Annual Partnership Cultural Picnic with the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society brings other cultures to our Club during this garden tour.
