Gymnastics for All – Health and Inclusion Program

The Cause

The Yellowknife Gymnastics Club (YKGC) is proud to introduce the Gymnastics for All – Health and Inclusion Program, an initiative that aligns with our mission to provide safe, inclusive, and development-focused gymnastics programs for children of all ages and abilities across the Northwest Territories.

Since 2003, YKGC has been a vital part of the Yellowknife community, offering both recreational and competitive programs that foster physical fitness, mental well-being, and skill development. With over 2,000 participants each year, our programs play a crucial role in the physical and emotional growth of children, teens, and adults. However, as a not-for-profit organization, we rely on community support to keep our programs accessible to all, especially for those facing financial or physical barriers. With this funding, we can ensure that no child is left behind, giving every child the opportunity to thrive through gymnastics.

The Gymnastics for All – Health and Inclusion Program aims to break down financial and personal barriers so that every child in Yellowknife, regardless of challenges, can participate in gymnastics. With a proven ability to improve children's physical fitness, mental health, and social skills, gymnastics should be available to everyone. This initiative will provide free or subsidized access to our recreational and competitive programs, foster an inclusive environment with adaptive equipment for children with disabilities, and create a sense of belonging in our community.

With this funding, YKGC can ensure that our programs are accessible to all, enabling children to build confidence, resilience, and a healthy lifestyle that will benefit them for years to come. The Gymnastics for All – Health and Inclusion Program is not just a sports initiative, it’s a powerful tool for creating a healthier, more inclusive Yellowknife. By offering financial assistance and an adaptive environment, we are making sure every child can enjoy the benefits of gymnastics, no matter their circumstances.

Who Will it Benefit?

The Gymnastics for All – Health and Inclusion Program is designed to directly benefit children between the ages of 2 and 16 in Yellowknife, with a special focus on those who face financial or social barriers. Whether a child is from a low-income family, has a disability, or is new to the community, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive. Currently, many families in our community are unable to afford extracurricular activities, and some children with special needs lack access to programs designed to accommodate them. This initiative aims to change that.
Why does this matter? In a city where 22% of the population is under the age of 15 (NWT Bureau of Statistics, 2023d), this program could potentially touch the lives of hundreds of children, giving them the opportunity to participate in gymnastics and improve their physical and emotional health. Through our adaptive programs and specially trained coaches, we will ensure that children of all abilities have the support they need to succeed. These children will benefit from improved fitness, social interaction, and the development of important life skills like discipline and teamwork.
