Music Program for Hay River & Neighbours
The Cause
The Kole Crook Fiddle Association has been reviving and teaching traditional northern music in the Northwest Territories since 2004.
We would like to offer a fun, no-cost music program to the youth of Hay River and neighbouring communities (K'atl'odeeche and Enterprise) as music is no longer a part of the curriculum in the primary and middle schools here.
Also, these communities were hit hard over the past two years, suffering major natural disasters (one flood and two wildfires) which resulted in three evacuations of the communities, the last of which lasted six weeks. Many families have yet to recover fully financially, and music instruction is considered a non-essential luxury that many cannot afford. We would like to offer a program, free of charge, so that all youth in the area can be exposed to the joys of learning to play an instrument, which is so rewarding and brings life-long enjoyment.
Students would have a choice of three instruments and would be taught by qualified instructors. Classes would be held at Kole Crook Fiddle Association headquarters in downtown Hay River.
Who Will it Benefit?
The youth of all three communities, Hay River, Enterprise & Hay River would benefit as well as their families.
