Neuro Centered Rehabilitation and Wellness Community

The Cause

The idea behind Neuro Centered is to develop a non profit center that is able to offer affordable, safe, timely and effective rehabilitation and wellness programs for individuals with various neurological conditions. The idea is the center will foster a supportive community for individuals with neurological conditions, their caregivers, and clinicians.
This idea developed from the notable gap in community rehabilitation and resources for those living with various neurological conditions. This gap became evident from working for the past 15 years in the healthcare system as a physiotherapist in outpatient rehabilitation for individuals with neurological conditions.
The plan is to start with as a small operation, offering a couple of high quality therapeutic services to have an immediate significant impact on individuals with neurological conditions. Starting as a smaller operation will allow for the provision of services with lower overhead start up costs. This will fill the gaps in our current healthcare system providing neurological rehabilitation to those who are not eligible for government funded programs, are currently on a waitlist, receive a limited number of sessions, or have limited access to care. Once operational, the therapeutic services offered will be able to provide individualized treatment to improve the functional abilities and quality of life for those with neurological conditions. As community awareness of need and impact grows, the idea is to have the center expand, offering a wider range of services. Individualized multidisciplinary rehabilitation services that will enable individuals to achieve their full potential will be the initial focus in the development plan. As a multidisciplinary site the a model for multidisciplinary care, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing among healthcare professionals will be established. Wellness programming aimed to attain better physical and mental health, improving one’s quality of life will be developed to support the rehabilitation programming.
Neuro Centered will be a non-profit neurological rehabilitation and wellness community committed to offering affordable, safe, timely and effective rehabilitation and wellness programs for individuals with neurological conditions. Neuro Centered will strive to be a beacon of hope and support for individuals with neurological conditions, regardless of their diagnoses and/or prognoses. Who Will it Benefit?

At this time in Edmonton and surrounding areas, there are no private or non-profit community based neurological rehabilitation centers or clinics offering multidisciplinary care from health professionals. Neuro Centered strives to change this to benefit the neurological community at large. First and foremost, this center will benefit individuals who have been diagnosed with various neurological conditions. Examples of common neurological conditions include but are not limited to Brain injury, Concussions, Stroke, Spinal cord injuries, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Migraines and Long Covid. At this time, in the Edmonton and surrounding area there are limited funded programs for individuals with neurological conditions. Publicly funded programs often have waitlist or strict criteria limiting who may access the services. This prevents timely, accessible and extensive rehabilitation to many individuals. Many individuals are expected to pay private clinics that do not have the knowledge or clinical experience to work with neurological conditions. Specific organizations offer wellness programing but only to very specific neurological conditions. The wellness program at Neuro Centered will be inclusive to those living with neurological conditions and their caregivers.
This center would also benefit the healthcare system for Edmonton and surrounding area acting as another facility offering experienced, high quality, affordable, multidisciplinary care. The demand for neurological rehabilitation services continues to grow, as the prevalence of neurological disorders increases globally. However, access to quality care remains limited due to a lack of resources and specialized facilities. Neuro Centered will be an specialized facility offering individuals will more options to quality care. Access to care with Neuro Centered will reduce the constant strain and demands on the health care system sector offering neurological rehabilitation.
Front line healthcare workers in neurological rehab can also benefit. 2024 Canadian research found healthcare works overall prevalence of burnout was 78.7%. This center will offer professional opportunities and growth promoting a work life balance as healthcare workers at the center will have personal autonomy in how and when they work, reducing burnout. Collaboration within and between different healthcare worker disciplines will provide a sense of support and community increasing workplace satisfaction.
