SHCL Winter Carnival
The Cause
Dating back to February 1962, the Sherwood Heights Community League (then referred to as the Sherwood Park Community League) was responsible for the first Winter Carnival held at the Log Cabin and the Sherwood Heights skating rink. The Winter Carnival included the crowning of the Carnival Queen, a dance for teens and adults, hockey, skating and other outdoor winter activities, and was wrapped up with a community supper at the Log Cabin. In March 2023, the current day Sherwood Heights Community League revamped the Winter Carnival and ran a day-long festival which has now become an annual staple in our community. The Winter Carnival consists of family friendly activities including skating, firepits, carnival games, face painting, horse drawn wagon rides, visits from Disney characters, live music, and a catered meal and snacks, all at no cost to attendees. The Carnival brings together many local businesses and volunteer groups who set up games and activities, as well as many families and community members. In 2024 we saw over 850 guests through our door for our Winter Carnival.
The Sherwood Heights Community League is hoping to carry on the tradition and host another Winter Carnival in 2025. As we are a non-profit community group, and we provide this event at no cost to our attendees, we are seeking funding to assist with the operational costs of the Carnival. Potential funds provided by Field Law would assist us to rent the historical Log Cabin for our event, along with the required insurance and licensing / permits required to host our festival.
Who Will it Benefit?
The potential funding provided by Field Law for the Sherwood Heights Community League's Winter Carnival in 2025 will benefit a wide range of individuals and groups in the community. Firstly, the Carnival is a family-friendly event that provides a fun and festive atmosphere for children and adults alike. By providing a number of family focused activities at no cost to attendees, the Carnival helps to promote a sense of community and togetherness, as families and community members come together to enjoy the festivities without any barriers to entry.
In addition to benefiting families and community members, the Winter Carnival also provides an opportunity for local businesses and volunteer groups to get involved in the community. Many local businesses set up games and activities at the Carnival, helping to promote their brand and give back to the community they service. Volunteer groups also have an opportunity to get involved and contribute to the community by helping to organize and run the event.
Finally, the potential funding provided by Field Law will directly benefit the Sherwood Heights Community League, a non-profit community group that is responsible for organizing and running the Winter Carnival. The funding will help to cover the operational costs of the event, including the rental of the historical Log Cabin, insurance, and licensing/permits required to host the festival. Without this funding from various organizations, the Community League may struggle to cover these costs and would be required to scale back the festival.
