Soup it Forward Alberta

The Cause

Nutrition is a human right but Canada has the highest level of food insecurity in history. Soup Sisters soup bank is a sustainable solution that breaks away from traditional food charity models. Our approach to tackling food insecurity on a larger scale is innovative and sustainable. Through our partnership with a local food production facility, we create freshly made high-quality soups formulated by a Certified Master Chef and food scientists to ensure each bowl is consistent, wholesome, and filling.

Soup Sisters cause brand includes a new and exciting opportunity for corporations, conferences, and events to pay it forward and support their own communities with a 'Hug in a Bowl'. This Alberta-wide Soup it Forward program is partially backed by the support of an Alberta Government grant and matching funds from corporate sponsors.

Share the warmth: Participants will be invited to purchase and serve conveniently packaged Soup Sisters soup at their next event or in their staff cafeteria or lounge. Soup Sisters will then deliver in equal measure to an agency or a low-income school in your city. It's a win-win for everyone. Our participants get to enjoy the same delicious nutrition that will be donated to Alberta's less fortunate, knowing that each pay it forward meal will have a positive impact on each of our recipients. Our soups are affordable and produced locally in Alberta and on a large-scale, commercial capacity and our charitable social enterprise will still enjoy a profit margin from each purchase. Profits will be allocated to our Soup Bank for ongoing soup production.

Launching in Alberta this fall, this do-good, socially-minded initiative will also help us collectively extend our reach to educate our communities about Alberta and Canada’s gap in nutrition.

Canada is in an affordability crisis. Putting food on the table has never been more difficult. Many are turning to social support and this unrelenting demand is straining many agencies that care for and support at-risk populations. Alberta is at the top of the list for food insecurity just behind Newfoundland, Labrador, and New Brunswick. At least 21.9% of Albertans are concerned about putting food on the table and resorting to food banks. Due to the demand, many food banks are unable to provide adequate nutrition. Our cost-effective, delicious, nutritional, and ready-to-heat-and-serve soup and Soup it Forward program is a one-of-a-kind and innovative way to help fill Canada's hunger gap.

Who Will it Benefit?

Due to rising inflation and highest level of food insecurity in Canada, and approximately 22% of Albertan's are food insecure. Many food banks, agencies, and community organizations that serve families and individuals at risk are finding it difficult to provide nutrition to their clients.

Due to the demand for nutrition and our efficient social enterprise model and nutritional and conveniently packaged soup, in 2023 Soup Sisters partnered with a record-breaking 60 national agencies and low-income schools. Last year alone we delivered over 100,000 individual servings to 60 women’s shelters, indigenous agencies, mental health, homeless, marginalized seniors, and students at low-income schools. 75% of these organizations were Alberta-based.

The launch of the Soup it Forward campaign could play an integral role in increasing our distribution to these recipients - and at a time when Alberta needs it most.

The opportunity for impact is as great as the need in our country, and in our province.
