Translation of Program Documents
The Cause
The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (AS AB/NT) serves over 9,200 individuals across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. These are persons living with dementia (PLWD), care partners (CP), family and friends. To respond to this growing number, we need to make our resources accessible to all Albertans in the Southern and Northern Markets and those living in the Northwest Territories, including those whose primary language is not English. We are requesting funding to translate documents for our programs, focusing on Indigenous and Tagalog languages. In 2021, 5% of Alberta’s population were Filipino Canadians, making Tagalog the most spoken language in Alberta outside of English and French.
We provide programs that support people throughout the dementia and caregiving journey and will focus on the following programs to translate resources:
First Link: The early intervention program connects PLWD and their CPs to AS AB/NT for services and support. It is a 2-hour small group session to learn about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, community supports and resources and how the Society can help plan for the future.
Seeds of Hope Family Learning Series: Family Learning Series helps answer questions about the dementia journey and defines phases of dementia in terms of the caregiving journey as the person with dementia progresses through the disease. The series is offered in-person in our regional offices and online at ASANT Café.
Young Onset Resources: People under 65 diagnosed with dementia face unique challenges such as finances, children, employment and health wishes.
In addition to the above programs that we will be providing translated documents, we also offer:
ASANT Café & DementiaTalk: An online community and education forum designed to help people connect, share, discuss and learn about dementia. It is a gathering place for individuals living with dementia, families, care partners, and friends. ASANT Café provides access to our learning and education series and webinars on topics of interest to those affected by dementia.
DementiaTalk Canada is a great way to meet others online to ask questions, share experiences, and find support for many dementia-related topics.
Minds in Motion: Combines physical activity and mental stimulation in a social environment for PLWD and CP
One-on-one and group support.
Materials created will be available in print & online due to varying comfort levels using technology and Wi-Fi access.
Who Will it Benefit?
AS AB/NT provided services at no cost to 9,298 individuals in 2022-2023, a 15% increase over the previous year. These people represented 455 communities across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. As the number of individuals we serve increases, we must adapt to provide resources in multiple languages to make our services accessible, culturally responsive and inviting throughout the dementia and caregiving journey. We will work with the Metis Nation of Alberta and other Indigenous groups to identify the Indigenous languages to start with for translation. We will also be seeking Filipino cultural and advocate groups to partner with to help spread the word about our resources.
