Wings of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation
The Cause
Established in 1995, the Wings of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation (WOH) is a registered charitable organization with a clear and compassionate purpose: to provide essential financial assistance to breast cancer patients undergoing or having received treatment at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. Our initiatives, including the Augmented Financial Assistance Program (AFAP) and Gifts of Hope, aim to alleviate the financial burdens often associated with breast cancer:
Augmented Financial Assistance Program (AFAP): This cornerstone program offers direct financial aid to breast cancer patients facing financial insecurity. It covers vital expenses like groceries, shelter, and utilities. In 2022, AFAP was accessed 145 times by 49 recipients, with an average request of $1,090 to a maximum of $5,000, providing crucial support during their cancer journey.
Gifts of Hope: Our Gifts of Hope initiative spreads positivity during the holiday season by providing care packages containing gift cards, books, holiday treats, and more to breast cancer patients. In 2022, we reached 45 recipients, bringing joy and comfort during a challenging time.
Allocation of Donated Funds: WOH is 100% volunteer-run, ensuring that over 95% of funds raised directly support breast cancer patients in need. This efficient resource allocation ensures that every donation directly translates into meaningful assistance for those who need it most.
No Recipient Turned Away: Generous donors like you have allowed us to never turn away a qualified recipient in need. Our commitment to providing support to low-income individuals who have exhausted other means of financial assistance remains unwavering.
Who Will it Benefit?
Donating to Wings of Hope (WOH) will benefit a diverse group of individuals affected by breast cancer in Southern Alberta, focusing on the most vulnerable community members. Here's an in-depth look at who will benefit:
1. Breast Cancer Patients: These funds primarily assist breast cancer patients in treatment. The support covers crucial expenses like groceries, shelter, and utilities, easing their financial burden during a challenging period.
2. Vulnerable Populations: WOH prioritizes vulnerable groups, including those on Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) and Income Support (IS). Donated funds help bridge the financial gap for these individuals, ensuring access to essential resources.
3. Multiple Illness and Physical Ailments: Many recipients battle not only breast cancer but also other illnesses and physical ailments. Donated funds assist them in managing the additional financial burden associated with their health conditions.
4. Diverse Demographics: The organization serves a diverse demographic, including different age groups, ethnicities, and socio-economic statuses, ensuring inclusivity in support provision.
5. Families and Caregivers: Families and caregivers of breast cancer patients indirectly benefit from Wings of Hope (WOH) by recognizing their crucial role in the patient's journey and lightening the patient's burden, which, in turn, eases their own load.
6. Resourceful Individuals in Need: WOH aids individuals who, despite adversity, demonstrate remarkable strength and resourcefulness. These funds empower them to navigate their challenges while maintaining their dignity.
In essence, these donated funds will profoundly impact individuals and families affected by breast cancer in Southern Alberta, providing a vital "hand up" to those who need it most.
